This policy describes the standards our journalists follow.
Accuracy and verification
We verify facts with reliable sources, documents or first-hand reporting before publishing. Where information cannot be fully confirmed, we say so clearly.
Sources
We identify our sources wherever possible. We protect the identity of confidential sources when there is a genuine risk of harm and we have confirmed their credibility.
Fairness and right of reply
People and organisations criticised in our reporting are given a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication.
News, opinion and analysis
We keep news reports separate from opinion and analysis, and label opinion pieces clearly.
Independence and sponsored content
Advertisers, sponsors and partners have no influence over our reporting. Sponsored or paid content is always labelled as such.
Images and media
We credit photographers and sources, and we do not publish images that have been altered to mislead readers.
Sensitive reporting
We take special care when reporting on children, victims of crime, communal or religious matters and suicide, and we avoid content that could incite hatred or violence.
Corrections
Mistakes are corrected openly. See our Corrections Policy.
